*Along similar lines, I have a backplane PCB from a gigaswitch made by Celox
Networks, a local (and long defunct) tech startup / former employer, slated
to become the surface of a coffee table. This is a 52layer PCB that
measures something like 48x24inches, weighs maybe 30lbs, and has lots of
pretty, gold-plated through-holes.*
*If someone wants to assist in constructing a nice base and legs for this
table, I'd be happy lend it to AR on a semi-permanent basis in exchange. My
current and any future roommates likely would disagree with me vociferously
on the aesthetic merits of this table, so an alternate home would be
sensible.

Pictures?
Also, does it work? How cool would it be to make the coffee table into our
central hub for our network? Need internet? Just plug into the coffee table!
Also, we could run jacks up to the edges of the table so that they're easily
accessible from any side :-).
I would still like to put the laptop screens under the glass and over the
main PCB surface, so I don't know if we can really make the whole top out of
this. But maybe put the laptop hardware on the sides and mount the screens
over the backplane PCB.
I think we're gonna need to worry about cooling, too. :-) Maybe toss some
120mm or 150mm fans in around the edge, too.

fans transfer dust, they you gotta clean the underside of the glass on
occasion, or have a filtration system...
this could get complicated if we think about it too much, we need to
just start building

The PCB I mentioned is just a raw PCB, nothing populated. You could likey
solder some bits to it, although I believe the backplane connectors (which
had insanely high pin density) are no longer available. I will try to get
pix of it later this evening.
I agree with Chriss on the merits of KISS.

It's a 52layer PCB, and I do know it has many many many many many power and
ground planes throughout its area. I'm not sure how much light would be
able to poke thru the silicon, but at least the holes would glow.
Definitely worth trying.

Sorry I haven't been keeping up with the mailing lists recently. (I'm trying
to Fight off browser tabs on my computer with a stick.) But why not add
power strips to the coffee table? The strips would have to be somewhere
where they wouldn't get wet. (It is still a coffee table.)
